Albert Haim was born in Paris, France, in 1931. He moved to Uruguay in the 1930s. He received his elementary (1936-1942) and high school educations (1942-1948) at the Lycée Français de Montevideo. He won a competitive Analytical Chemistry contest in 1952 and became a fellow at the Instituto de Quimica, University of Uruguay 1952-1954. Albert received an Engineering Chemistry degree at the University of Uruguay in 1954 and a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Southern California in 1960. In 1961 he was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University with Henry Taube, 1983 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He was assistant and associate professor of chemistry at the Pennsylvania State University (1962-1966) and professor of chemistry at Stony Brook University (1966-2001). He was an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow 1964-1967. He was the recipient of the Stony Brook Undergraduate Chemistry Society Best Teacher Awards in 1972 and 1976. Albert was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1981 and the SUNY Stony Brook Alumni Association Outstanding Teacher Award in 1994. He was a Visiting Scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1965 and 1994. He was associate editor of the American Chemical Society journal “Inorganic Chemistry” (1990-2001). Albert has published over 100 papers on the subject of Inorganic Reaction Mechanisms, in particular Electron Transfer Reactions of Coordination Compounds. He was a visiting professor at the Universities of Tucuman (Argentina), Lisbonne (Portugal) and Neuchâtel (Switzerland). He has given Plenary Lecures at International Conferences on Coordination Compounds in England, Hungary, Brazil, Argentina and Switzerland. Haim was the 54th Stony Brook Chemistry Department Commencement Speaker on May 17, 2024.
In 2001, Albert Haim launched the internet website http://bixbeiderbecke.com dedicated to the Davenport IA 1920s jazz musician Leon “Bix” Beiderbecke. He created the Facebook page LeonBismarkBixBeiderbecke (2000 members) on December 28, 2016.
Albert Haim published dozens of peer-reviewed articles in The Mississippi Rag, The International Association of Jazz Records Collectors Journal, The Vintage Jazz Mart Magazine, The Association for Recorded Sound Collections Journal, The Syncopated Times and the Journal of Jazz Studies. Albert Haim is the recipient of five IAJRC James C. Gordon Best Article Awards. He received the 2006 Jean Goldkette Award of Excellence from The Jean Goldkette Foundation and the 2014 Bix Lives Award from the Bix Jazz Society. Albert is an Advisor of the Bix Beiderbecke Museum and Archive. In 2013, Albert presented, on permanent loan, Bix’s 1931 Wurlitzer’s baby grand piano to the Bix Beiderbecke Museum and Archive. Albert Haim has published about 50 articles in the peer-reviewed jazz journals Vintage Jazz Mart M agazine (England), International Association of Jazz Records Collectors Journal (IAJRC) (USA), and Association for Recorded Sound Collections Journal (USA). He is the recipient of five IAJRC James C. Gordon Best Article awards and of the Bix Memorial Jazz Society’s Jean Goldkette and Bix Lives Awards.
Composer, Arranger, Musician
Paolo Corraini (born March 2, 2002, in Sondrio) is an Italian composer and musician. After an academic IT formation, he enrolled at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, where he’s studying classical composition. Since 2016, Paolo has received tuition from some of the most renowned Jazz musicians, specializing in guitar, tenor and plectrum banjo, and trumpet. As a performer, ensemble, and artistic director, he has collaborated with esteemed jazz figures such as Italian Jazz Extraordinaries Paolo Tomelleri, Emilio Soana, Rudy Migliardi, and Lino Patruno. Beyond performance, Paolo is a dedicated collector of jazz heritage, amassing a collection of musical instruments, books, records, gramophones, phonographs, and memorabilia. Since 2022, his “Tribute to Bix”— which explores Bix’s music from the Wolverine era to his final recordings with Hoagy Carmichael— has been featured at several jazz festivals alongside many renowned musicians.
In 2024, he created the Paolo Corraini Archive.
In 2025, he restyled www.bixbeiderbecke.com to this new edition along with its founder Albert Haim.
The website underwent a complete redesign, bringing a fresh and modern look while preserving its deep dedication to Bix Beiderbecke, ensuring that the site’s extensive historical archives, rare recordings, and community discussions remained accessible to jazz enthusiasts and researchers worldwide. The revamped platform now offers an improved user experience, interactive features, and enhanced resources.
